What Are the Dangerous Goods Classifications?

Posted by hurleymorales04ljeozn on

Dangerous goods classification is described as products which are inherently hazardous in nature and cannot be transported in a safe manner. Classification of dangerous goods by IATA is based on the safety features of their goods, their suitability for handling, their effect on public safety and their mode of transportability. The classification is further subdivided into nine categories based on the kind of risk products or materials present:

Explosive goods classifications are divided into nine classes depending on the characteristics of the item which could result in its explosion. Gas: Gases include chlorotic and oxalic acid, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen, which may explode when subjected to elevated temperatures. Flammables: Flammables contain acetylene, ethylenediamine, hydrogen cyanide, sulfuric acid, acetone, nitroglycerin, nitrogen trifluoride, and potassium chlorate. Flammables may also include hydrocarbons, oxidizing agents, corrosive solvents, phosphorous vapors, nitrogen dioxide, nitrous oxide and xenon.

There is also the Dangerous Goods Classification List (DMCL). Which is a list of hazardous goods provided for export and import functions under the United States Trade Act of 1970. The DMCL Includes the classes of hazardous substances listed from the United States Department of State.

Another helpful classification is the Transport and Security classification of goods (TSGC), which contains four chief classes of goods utilized for the transport of goods. These include the goods subject to the TCPR, TSCA, TGA and EPA.

Another classification is that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), that is responsible for the regulation of the transport of dangerous goods by sea and air. The ICAO Classification of Dangerous Goods (CDG) defines the classification of cargo or aircraft-carrying goods, the identification of items that should be declared on shipping records, and the procedures for reporting cargo violations. And violations of transport laws. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is responsible for establishing federal safety guidelines to decrease the risks of goods being shipped by air.

There are also other organizations like the US-Australia-NZ Group of Specialized Pros (USGSE) and the United States Board for Laboratory Services (USBLOS) offering information on various hazardous substances and their classification. The CDG supplies more comprehensive information regarding global classification compared to the other two groups.
